BACHELOR OF COMMERCE *

PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM
Have you ever imagined yourself taking an executive position with one of Australia’s largest companies? Managing your own small business or enterprise? Managing the financial interests of a global humanitarian aid organisation?
Maybe you want to study in a faculty that aims to inspire socially innovative commerce as well as recognising the importance of learning skills that will equip you for the workforce?
2010 marks a new focus for the Bachelor of Commerce at UOW. Our belief in Commerce students as a force for positive change has led to the creation of a new Bachelor of Commerce that is unique to Australia.
Our Faculty purpose is to inspire socially innovative commerce. It applies across private, non-profit and government sectors, linking business innovation to the collective wealth and well-being of people and our planet. Socially innovative commerce is built on understanding genuine corporate social responsibility, business ethics, environmental sustainability and respect for humanity.
As a Commerce graduate you will leave UOW with a world-class degree and great employment prospects. You will have become a well-rounded individual, someone who is informed, connected and a clear communicator, with an understanding of social responsibilities. We believe these qualities will empower tomorrow’s leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs.
Studying socially innovative commerce at UOW is an undertaking to work for the creation of better futures for individuals, organisations and communities.
Bachelor of Commerce - with Majors
All students enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce study the principles of responsible commerce in first-year and the core disciplines of accounting, economics, finance, management and marketing. In second-year, students discover specialised areas of study by choosing from 12 majors. Undergraduates can major in: accounting, business innovation, business law, economics, finance, financial planning, human resource management, international business, management, marketing, public relations and supply chain management. In third-year, every student will undertake the new capstone subject ‘socially innovative commerce’ while continuing in-depth study in their chosen majors.
Please note, not all majors can be completed at all locations.
Bachelor of Commerce (Management)
Management is the art and science of planning, coordinating and leading group efforts; it is the mobilising of human and material resources to achieve organisational goals. Managerial skills include the ability to make sound judgments on all issues that arise within a business and to achieve objectives through organisational skills.
Subject areas include:
- Management of change
- Organisational behaviour
- Human resource management
- Strategic management
- Operations management
- Quality management.
This Major aims to develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the complexities of management; as well as skills in decision making, conflict resolution, administration and communication.
Bachelor of Commerce (Accountancy)
Whether they work in a large multinational company, a government agency or a small company, accountants play a pivotal role in advising management or their clients on the financial direction of the enterprise. This major prepares students for a career in all levels of industry, with an emphasis on integrating accounting theory and practice that provides experience in the diverse areas of accountancy. On completion, students will have the necessary skills and qualifications to work as an accountant.

- Financial accounting
- Corporate finance
- Management accounting
- Business law
- Auditing
- Information systems in accounting
Graduates who have completed the prescribed degree program can apply to join the Certified Practicing Accountant body (CPA Australia) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA). Graduates are eligible to apply for membership with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
Bachelor of Commerce – NO MAJOR (replaces Bachelor of Business Administration)
A Bachelor of Commerce with no major is a generalist degree designed to provide students with a broad educational base in business as preparation for a variety of positions in corporations, small businesses and the public sector. Students complete core commerce subjects along with our capstone subject ‘socially innovative commerce’. They are able to select subjects from all Commerce disciplines without being restricted to any particular major. This degree provides a solid basis for developing high-level understanding of all the principal areas of business including: accountancy, finance, marketing and management.

This program is not suitable for students who wish to major in a specialised area of Commerce
OTHER MAJORS
Students who are accepted into the Bachelor of Commerce at Moss Vale and want to undertake the following majors are able to undertake at least the compulsory core first year subjects of a Bachelor of Commerce at the Moss Vale Education Centre. Students will then need to complete their program on the Wollongong Campus.

*Students who want to take a major in Marketing may complete two years of the program at Moss Vale. Subjects need to be chosen carefully and students need to seek academic advice.
